I haven’t always felt connected to animals or understood the love and connection one can share with an animal or family pet. However, when my husband Shane bought our German Shepherd, Lucy, home from the Animal Welfare League, she became my walking partner, my running buddy, my shadow and my furry, four-legged BFF. My Lulu has taught me an unspoken language of love, understanding and connection. Maybe I’m just mellowing in my old age…I dunno… but other pet lovers seem to understand what I’m on about!
We now have our beautiful Django – another Shepherd we bought through Pet Rescue. It took me a while to warm to Django because I didn’t want to upset Lucy as she gets very protective and jealous. Although rescue animals may come with some unknown history or baggage, if you are ever considering getting a family pet, please consider rescuing one first, as opposed to purchasing from the local pet shop.
In my opinion, animals are beautiful gifts to us from God, just like the mountains, the forests and all the plants and trees. Even more than that, much like our children who come to teach us; we can learn, grow and change just by understanding and connecting with these wonderful and highly intelligent creations.
